Whether you're displaying photos at home, in a gallery, in a museum or in your display window, it's very important to use your creativity and create an eye-catching display. The quality of the photos matters as much as the way in which they are grouped together, the lighting, the height of the photos, the distance between them etc. Plus, you might want to consider whether you want to hang only black and white photos, only color photos or a combination of the two.

Black and White vs. Color

It generally makes sense to hang black and white photos with other black and white photos and color photos with other color photos. When you mix them up, you may find that the eye is attracted too much towards color photos and the black and white photos don't get as much attention even if they are very good photos. So if you have both types of photos, you may want to create separate displays.

Grouping Photos by Theme

You might also want to separate and hang photos on the basis of their subject matter. For example, you could group photos of people together. Or if you have a number of photos of nature, these can be grouped together too. At times, you risk hanging photos that are too similar together. If this happens, they might end up blurring into each other. So it makes more sense to take photos that are generally on the same theme but that are not of the same exact thing or person.

Grouping Photos by Size

You can also think about whether you want to hang several photos of the same size in one display or if you want to vary the sizes of the photos. In general, it's a good idea to use photos of various sizes and group them together intuitively. You can play around with the display by putting the photos on a flat surface and moving them around until you feel satisfied. Once you know the order in which you'd like them to be hung, you can decide on the display system and actually put them up on the wall.
