Create Complementary Displays Using a Gallery Rail System
When you're hanging pictures in a gallery, it's important to do so in a way that allows the viewer to take each picture in completely, whether it's a photo or a painting. If possible, you want to leave a few feet of space around each picture so that when the viewer is standing in front of it, they're not distracted by other pieces of art.
Hanging Similar/Complementary Pieces of Art Together
If your gallery consists of different rooms or sections, then you can make sure that each room/section has a theme so that all the artworks hanging inside it are similar in some way. The other option is to take a few different pieces of art that are not like each other but that complement each other in some way.
So, for example, you could hang all the pieces by a certain artist in one room or section of your gallery. But you could also take several different pieces by different artists that resemble each other in some way and hang them in proximity to each other.
Grouping Pieces of Art by Subject and Style
You could group paintings on the basis of their subjects. All the paintings featuring human figures could be grouped together. Or all the paintings which are geometric in nature can also be grouped together. On the other hand, you can group paintings on the basis of the painting style; all impressionists could be grouped together, as could all abstract paintings.
So there are many options when it comes to hanging paintings in your gallery. It's important to put some thought into how you're going to group them.
Using a Gallery Rail System to Hang Artwork
You also need to make sure that you have a good hanging system for your gallery. A gallery rail system might be right for you because it allows you to get rails which are mounted on the ceiling or on the wall. You can have cables hanging from these rails and cable hooks which will hold onto the paintings. By switching the cables and hooks around, you can change the hanging pattern if you need to get rid of old paintings and hang new ones.
