Choosing Your Best Cable System
Ever notice picture rails lining the walls of an old house? Sometimes mistaken for decorative molding, picture rails are common in many 19th century homes. Basic in concept, these lipped rails create a ledge to suspend artwork using a hook attached to ribbon or wire. This hanging method prevents unnecessary hammering into the hard plaster walls common in older homes.
At Systematic Art, we bring this simple solution into the modern age with our adjustable cable systems. Whether intended for a home office, museum wall, or coffee shop display, our cable systems give you this tried and true technique with a sophisticated new look. But how do you choose the best cable system for you?
Step 1. Choose a picture rail style
Our picture rail options come in two main types: wall mounted and ceiling mounted. What kind of walls are you working with? If your walls are brick or marble, ceiling mounted may be a better option for you, as it avoids drilling into these hard materials. How heavy is the artwork you are going to hang? Each of our picture rails is rated to carry up to a certain amount of weight, so be sure to take this into account when making your selection.
Step 2. Select a hanging cable
While many different cables are available, take time to confirm which types are compatible with your desired picture rail. Many of our cables come in two material options: stainless steel or nylon. Stainless steel cables are a sleek and sophisticated look, like stainless steel appliances in a modern kitchen. However, if minimizing the appearance of your hanging system is desired, consider using nylon for a near invisible or "floating" look.
Step 3. Pick a hook
Our various hook options securely connect your artwork to the hanging cable. Two main types exist: side screw, which is tightened to the cable with the turn of a screw, and self gripping. Which you select will depend on the type of cable used and how much weight you need the hook to bear. Finally, if color is what you're after, our Self-Gripping - (Picture Hook) with Safety-Lock comes in a variety!
Step 4. Need anything else?
Now that you've found the hanging cable system that works for you, we're here if you need anything else. From rail installation hardware to additional cable accessories and tensioners, we can help with all the final details to make your display perfect.
