The Project

Systematic Art worked with Material Good at its flagship location in New York City's SoHo district, providing a professional picture hanging system for an environment where fine art, exceptional watches and jewelry come together as part of the overall experience.

Founded in 2015, Material Good conceived its original SoHo flagship not as a conventional luxury boutique, but as an intimate, residential-style destination. Fine art plays an important role within that environment, displayed alongside rare timepieces, fine and vintage jewelry and other collectible objects.

Where Luxury Retail Meets Fine Art

Material Good's SoHo flagship brings together some of the world's most desirable luxury objects within a setting designed to feel more like a sophisticated New York residence than a traditional retail store. Its world includes exceptional watches, distinctive jewelry, vintage pieces, collectibles and fine art.

At the time of Systematic Art's work with Material Good, the art displayed in the space included works by internationally recognized artists such as Damien Hirst, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. The artwork was therefore not simply decorative. It was an important part of the character and visual identity of the interior.

Protecting a Carefully Designed Interior

Material Good required a secure way to display valuable artwork while maintaining the flexibility to change individual pieces and rearrange the collection as the interior evolved.

Traditional picture hanging methods would have required new mounting points whenever artwork was moved. Instead, Systematic Art provided a professional rail-based hanging system that created a permanent display infrastructure while reducing the need for repeated alterations to finished walls.

A Flexible System for a Changing Collection

Systematic Art supplied its Gallery Picture Rail together with stainless steel hanging cables and adjustable security picture hooks. The combination allowed artwork to be repositioned both horizontally and vertically while providing secure support appropriate for a luxury retail environment.

As artwork changed, the hanging system could adapt with it. Individual works could be moved, replaced or regrouped without redesigning the underlying installation each time. This gave Material Good the freedom to refresh the space while preserving a clean and consistent architectural appearance.

Security Without Compromising the Design

In a setting combining valuable artwork with rare watches and fine jewelry, security was an important consideration. Systematic Art incorporated self-gripping security picture hooks into the installation, providing a more controlled connection between the artwork and the hanging system.

At the same time, the rail, cables and hooks were designed to remain visually subordinate to the artwork and surrounding interior. The objective was for visitors to experience the collection and the space rather than the hardware supporting it.

Growing With Material Good

The relationship continued as Material Good expanded its original space. Systematic Art returned to provide additional hanging systems, installation expertise and support as the environment evolved.

That ability to expand an existing installation is one of the advantages of a modular picture hanging system. Additional rail and hanging components can be incorporated as a space grows, allowing the display infrastructure to evolve with the client rather than requiring an entirely new approach.

The Result

The completed installation provided Material Good with a secure and adaptable way to incorporate important works of art into its distinctive SoHo environment while preserving the flexibility required for a changing collection.
