Leica Camera | Los Angeles & San Francisco

Photography Gallery Picture Hanging Systems

labelProject: Photography Galleries & Retail

The Project

Systematic Art is pleased to have worked with Leica Camera, providing the picture hanging hardware for its Los Angeles and San Francisco locations. Leica is one of the world's most recognized names in premium photographic equipment and optics, and both locations combine the Leica retail experience with spaces dedicated to photography and exhibitions.

Because exhibitions change over time, Leica required a professional hanging system that would allow photographs and framed works to be repositioned for different shows without repeatedly creating new mounting points in the walls. The system also needed to complement the clean architectural character of the Leica stores and galleries without distracting from the photography on display.

A Flexible System for Changing Photography Exhibitions

Systematic Art created a modular picture hanging solution using Gallery Picture Rail, Stainless Steel J Hook Cables, and adjustable security picture hooks.

Once installed, the rail provides a permanent hanging infrastructure. Photographs can be moved horizontally along the picture rail and adjusted vertically using the hanging cables and hooks, allowing gallery staff to create new arrangements for exhibitions of different sizes and formats.

This approach provides the flexibility required for a changing exhibition program while helping reduce repeated drilling and alterations to the gallery walls. The hanging components can remain in place while the artwork and exhibition layout evolve.

Supporting Leica's Photography Galleries

Leica's Los Angeles and San Francisco locations are more than traditional camera stores. Photography and photographic culture are an important part of both environments. The Los Angeles location includes a dedicated Leica Gallery presenting temporary exhibitions, while the San Francisco location hosts rotating exhibitions featuring regional, national and international photographic talent.

Over the years, Leica's Los Angeles gallery program has presented work by internationally recognized photographers and artists, including Lenny Kravitz, Todd Hido, Mary Ellen Mark and Ralph Gibson. Changing exhibitions such as these illustrate why an adaptable gallery hanging system is valuable: each new body of work can require different spacing, positioning and display arrangements.

Los Angeles & San Francisco

The Leica Store and Gallery Los Angeles is located at 8783 Beverly Blvd. in West Hollywood, California. The gallery occupies a dedicated exhibition environment within Leica's Los Angeles location and serves as a destination for photographers, collectors and photography enthusiasts.

The Leica Store San Francisco is located at 463 Bush Street in San Francisco and also incorporates rotating photography exhibitions into the Leica experience.

Systematic Art supplied the picture hanging hardware for both locations, providing Leica with a consistent and flexible approach to displaying photography as exhibitions and installations change.

The Result

The completed installations provide Leica with professional picture hanging systems designed around the needs of active photography galleries. Rather than treating each photograph as a permanent wall installation, the rail, cable and hook system creates an adaptable display infrastructure that can be reconfigured as new exhibitions are installed.

The Leica projects demonstrate how professional picture hanging hardware can become part of the architecture of a gallery or retail environment, providing flexibility behind the scenes while allowing the photography itself to remain the visual focus.
